“The pitch was, you were buying a car and a boat, and it was, in fact, both. Unfortunately it wasn’t a very good car, nor a very good boat.”
A.J. Baime on the Amphicar in The Wall Street Journal
When it’s a warm and sunny November day in Orlando it’s the perfect time to put the top down and take your car for a boat ride. I took this photo yesterday at Disney Springs where tourist pay $125 for a unique 30 min trip. While I’d seen pictures and videos of the Amphicar before this was actually the first one I’ve seen drive into the the water. The vehicle was designed by Hanns Trippel and built in West Germany in the ’60s, and apparently about 4,000 were made. Today there are less than a 1,000 still in existence.
According to Wikipedia the Amphicar has been featured in several movies including Inspector Clouseau (1968) and Pontiac Moon (1994).
