At the Emmy Awards last night. Friday Night Light Lights had one more last second victory in its playbook.
There aren’t many things I don’t like about the Tv program Friday Night Lights, but one of them was its dependence on many last second victories in close football games. Sure, every week during close football games during the season there are games decided on the last play of the game. (The Michigan beating Notre Dame earlier this month on a last second touchdown goes down as an instant classic.) But in films and TV last second victories often come across as clichés.
But last night Kyle Chandler surprise Emmy win as Best Actor in a Drama, and Jasom Katims win for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, were won last sweet come from behind victory for FNL.
Just this weekend I finished the third season of Friday Night Lights, and on the DVD commentary of the last show that season Katims mentioned that when they produced that show they didn’t know if there would be a season four. So how much sweeter for him that they there was not only a season four—and a season five—but on the very last episode he would write for FNL he would win an Emmy.
For Kyle it’s been a 20 year journey to stand were he stood last night holding the Emmy in his right hand. Again, on the season 3 DVD commentary, Katims mentioned how both Kyle and Connie Britton (who played his FNL wife) both would request that their lines be cut. Preferring a minimalistic and naturalistic acting approach. One that avoided exposition dumps so often found on TV programs. One in which a look or a glance conveyed a world of emotions.
Congrats to Kyle and Jason and the whole team of people who made it all possible.
