“The internet is a miraculous thing, so just share as much as you can— self-publish, blog….”
Screenwriter Diablo Cody
Never did I think when I jumped into the blogging world with my first post back on January 22, 2008 that I’d end up writing 1,000 posts. But that’s where we are today on Screenwriting from Iowa…and Other Unlikely Places.
1,000 posts. Not sure I’ll have the energy, time or desire to do this again.
Not that it’s over, but thanks for the ride. Because without readers like you I’m not sure I would have gotten past post #10. Watching the numbers rise month after month, post after post, year after year has been a great encouragement. So a big assist on your part. (Especially, those of you who have been around since the first year when I had those regular monster-like 1,500 word posts.) Thank you.
Now it’s time for Screenwriting from Iowa 2.0. Not that I know exactly what that looks like, but I’m going start by launching my first Kickstarter campaign in the next few days. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kickstarter it is a funding platform for the arts where filmmakers, musicians, writers and the like can explore alternative ways of raising financial support for their projects.
For now, I’ll end this post with a quote from that Midwest gal who inspired me via her success to toss my info out on the Internet and see what happened:
“Here’s my unsolicited advice to any aspiring screenwriters who might be reading this: Don’t ever agonize about the hordes of other writers who are ostensibly your competition. No one else is capable of doing what you do.”

“Clear Eyes, Full Heart, Can’t Lose,” right, Ms. Cody?

Congratulations, Scott! When should be expect the book?
Avid Reader
Congratulations, Scott! I consider myself fortunate to have found your blog…and I hope you decide to do another thousand….
Congrats!
Thanks for your blog! It’s the best blog on screenwriting I’ve ever seen (do you grant exceptions to superlatives about your work?). I’m looking forward to your condensed notes from Tattersall’s workshop, and being kept up to speed on your kickstarter campaign. Kudos to you for pursuing your dreams.
I hope you’re having a great week! My name is Harrison and I work with SnagFilms.com. We are an online library of over 2100 films, free for audiences to stream. I just wanted to let you know that a film that you may be very interested in, “Dreams On Spec”, is now available for free streaming via this link: http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/dreams_on_spec/
Please consider spreading the word about this film either on or through your website. There is an embeddable link on the linked page I’ve provided. Feel free to also email me back with any questions, and if you decide to use it so we can send it out through our network for cross promotion! Given the timely release of the film, this would be a tremendous opportunity for both of us!
Looking forward to working with you!
Harrison
Thanks for all the congrats. And Will, yes you can always use superlatives when you talking about my blog. (And thanks for the reminder about the Tattersall notes.)
As far as the book, if the Kickstarter thing goes down like I hope it does— then I’d hope for it to be done-done around Novemeber.
Scott: “Bird by Bird,” 1000 posts on Screenwriting From Iowa, your second blog’s advent, quoting Diablo Cody (again (: -), Kickstarter, and a “book in you” – fellow Iowan – you are on a roll, brother. Keep the faith!
Thanks Barbara. I actually don’t know if I’m on a roll—or on a runaway train. There’s an old quote from race car legend Mario Andretti that goes something like, “If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.”
