Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was one of America’s greatest painters. He began his career as an illustrator before moving to Prout’s Neck, Maine to paint full time. His style was eclectic as he created his art in oil, etching, wood engraving, and watercolor. He is most known or his land and seascapes. His most popular works are Crack the Whip, Breezing Up ( A Fair Wind), and The Gulf Stream.
Much of his work depicts the New England coastline, but he also ventured to Cuba, the Bahamas, and Florida where he continued to paint in the warmer months. I thought of him today because I did a photo shoot at Blue Springs State Park in Central Florida. Blue Springs flows into the St. John’s River and the St. John’s River was one place that Homer enjoyed because of his love of fishing.
“What they call talent is nothing but the capacity for doing continuous work in the right way.”

I RECENTLY INHERITED A PRINT BY WINSLOW HOMER, I HAVE TRIED RESEARCHING EVERYWHERE. CANT FIND IT. THERE WERE ONLY 378 COPIES OF THIS PRINT AND IT IS DATED 1889 AND IS SIGNED. IT WAS GIVEN TO A MEMBER OF THE NEW YORK ANGLERS CLUB, IT LOOKS TO BE IN ITS ORIGINAL FRAME, IT WAS CUSTOM FRAMED IN 1966 THE DATE IS ON AND THE FRAMER IS ON THE BACK OF FRAME.. MAYBE YOU CAN GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT ON THIS PRINT?? THANK YOU
It’s really terrific of you to focus on a master like Homer on a site (ostensibly) dedicated solely to screenwriting. Writers can always be influenced by people engaged in other artistic endeavors. Hemingway’s style was influenced by the paintings of Cezanne, after all.
