<description>Richard Walter’s teaches screenwriting at UCLA and says that films are all about identity. Walter's writes in his book "The Whole Picture," "We spend much of our lives trying to reconcile these two halves of our spirit and soul-- call it identity--as we struggle to figure out just what and who we genuinely are. The reason we go to movies is precisely to explore these perpetually unanswerable questions regarding our identity."

As a psychologist I’m sure you wouldn’t have much trouble finding someone’s identity if they told you about their five favorite films and why they liked them.

A book you may enjoy (and writer David Mamet recommends highly) is “The Uses of Enchantment” by Bruno Bettelheim. Bettelheim looks at the meaning and importance of fairy tales from the standpoint of a child psychologist.

<description>I'm looking forward as another great writer comes out of Iowa. I am a psychologist just starting up a blog on what we can learn about people and relationships from the movies--and the experience of writing.

What part of Iowa? My grandparents are Danes from Elk Horn, Iowa.
